KRS-ONE has been somewhat of a myth to me. Of course I’ve heard the name, and I had heard and see enough to know he is akin to a founding father of hip-hop. He’s seen it all, a historian of hip hop, and political activist, a teacher. Who your favorite rapper claims to be. Today he sat down with Talib Kweli & Tef Poe. Here are couple of things that stood out to me:
KRS One start with saying that most Americans aren’t as American as they claim to be. In the our declaration of independence it says that, “It is our patriotic duty to revolt against tyrannical power” but at this point in America it’s the politician would rather cozy to the tyranny instead of revolting. Saying, “These people never win, so they puff up their chest” they just fake it till they make it.
He also touched on some of the same issues that were happening in 1963, in Dr. King’s speech, are still happening today. A continuous conversation that I’ve been seeing and hearing about online in a bit of an awkward realization. Though about 60 years have passed since Civil Right, American find themselves talking about the same issues, “were not reading our own history”. We are suck in a cycle that doesn’t progress.
what is the actual philosophy of hip-hop?“togo back to peace, love and unity…andsafety having fun”
peace: when we were back in the hood, we didn’t know we were broke. We were just living getting by. We weren’t chasing money and status like today
love: if you don’t love what you do, you won’t last long in it
unity: I don’t have to like you, but we can agree on this issue.
KRS-One actually spits the knowledge of what the words hip-hop actually mean. Originally on the recording, Hip Hop Live. Now that I think about I don’t think that anyone has ever told me or if I even care to really look up a definition of hip hop. I mean who was I gonna ask, Merriam-Webster?
“Hip means to know, it’s a form of intelligence. To be hip is to be update and relevant. Hop is a form of movement. You can’t just observe a hop you got to get up and do it. Hip and hop is more than music. Hip is the knowledge. Hop is the movement, Hip and hop is intelligent movement or relevant movement. We’re selling the music. Write this down on your black books and journals. Hip hop culture is eternal. Run and tell all of your friends. An ancient civilization has been born again. It’s a fact. I come back every year. I get newer. I’m the dust on the moon.”

In this episode, i was stuck inside on a rainy day and i came across my favorite anime online so i started listening to Original Soundtrack which was a fusion of jazz, rock, and blues. I had found one of seatbelts albums a few years ago but i didn’t know they had multiple album so i put them on shuffle and just listened. here and there i try to explain why i love the show and it’s characters. emphasis on the try. but either way i think that the music is awesome and i hope you enjoy.

Sorry, after posting yesterday I was informed that audio couldn’t be hear. Come to find out nothing got recorded for the original episode 24 other than my voice here and there. Instead of trying to recreate that session, i just decide to record a whole another show. which i think came out better than the original. i guess that first session was just to shake off the rust. but that being said i checked the audio, did my test and fixed whatever was going on with the record software. earl is always someone i’m excited to hear from in or outside of music. he never does what you expected him to do. sonically he’s been down a path that that’s reminiscent of mos def and mf doom, where the beat might have you say, “what the fuck is this?” if you’re not familiar. but if you stay and listen closely you find more than what meets the eye. artist like earl have always had a place in hip hop. they may not reach pop music status but definitely cause a moment of, “hold up i need to check this out before i move on with my day”. by design earl doesn’t love the spotlight but understand the balance of being forward facing when the time is right to present his work to the audience of hip hop. he’ll pop up here and there with moments and hip hop will nod their head in approval or laughter and then it back to the dark alleys of hip hop where he looms making music and putting on artist like mike and mavi. artist that are great rappers and artist but also don’t fit inside what is “popular” by the mainstream, and may not want the attention of the mainstream. artist like earl can still kind of move around without causing riots unlike their counterparts like a drake or Kendrick. earl can rap at the same level when it comes to bars and rhymes but he’s not selling the flashy image or lifestyle that comes with being a rapper, he’s selling himself and his truth. just this weekend earl has dropped a suprise album with little to no promotion just as tyler did a few months ago. with an interview with the new York post via their popcast. 10 songs and about 25 mins out audio. i’m excited to sit with these songs as see what secrets unfold in the coming days.
